See?! I did indeed grow a moustache for Movember!
Me with a moustache, hahaha!
On a more serious note though, according to their website - https://za.movember.com/about/foundation - The Movember Foundation is a global charity committed to men living happier, healthier and longer lives. Since 2003, millions have joined the men's health movement, raising close to R6 billion and funding over 1,000 projects focusing on prostate and testicular cancer, poor mental health and physical inactivity.
I really like their Vision Statement: To have an everlasting impact on the face of men's health.
Apart from the clever marketing of Movember and donations raised, they have created a positive change for men's health by raising awareness and educating men year-round. As a first-time moustache grower this year, I totally agree with that statement as it definitely was a conversation starter (in my case anyway!) and that in itself is a positive thing, as many guys find it difficult to discuss male-related health issues. They also have a 'MOVE in Movember' challenge which is essentially a November-long physical fitness challenge. I feel I do my bit to keep fit so I skipped it this year but I did learn four very important things - namely:
You also don't have to be a 'Mo Bro' to help, 'Mo Sista's' can help too - by encouraging the men in your lives to go get checked up, or by encouraging them to get off the couch or by making a donation. Every bit helps.
I also started thinking about how many people, men and women alike, that I personally know who are fighting - some have sadly lost their battle - against cancer, in the many guises that it comes in. So ladies, don't forget to go for your annual check-up too.
Until next time,
