Birds in Flight by Steffi Steffens
Chris and I attended the opening of an art exhibition at a local gallery on 7 December 2015 - we almost didn’t go as it was a miserable, rainy Monday night but we decided to go have a look-see.
It was Chris’ first time attending an exhibition at artSPACE but I had been to one before - albeit a good 6 or 7 years prior - I know, I know... I should hang my head in shame as someone who has so many artist friends and acquaintances one really should be more supportive but life happens, things get busy and social circles break but I digress.

artSPACE Durban is an art gallery located in a warehouse in a light industrial area of Durban and this year they celebrated the 13th year of their Annual Affordable Art Show and for obvious reasons this annual event has become one of their most popular exhibitions. This time around they managed to select and collect a wide range of fine art and from what we could see on the opening night, the gallery was full of a wide selection of works to give buyers and the general public something interesting to view, discuss and / or purchase.
With over 70 artists participating this year, there was a wide variety of artistic mediums to peruse, from oil paintings to ceramics, prints, photographs, sketches and so much more and as with all their previous Annual Affordable Art Show exhibitions, the maximum sale price was R3 500 or less, per piece. What we liked about the show was that if you saw something you liked, you could buy it on the spot and take it home with you straight away - none of that having to wait for the exhibition to run it’s course before you can collect your purchase(s) - which makes it all the more exciting and in theory is meant to encourage people to buy during the show, making it an interactive experience too.
The Annual Affordable Art Show also gives people the chance to start collecting art at an affordable price - if you’re anything like the two of us there was plenty to choose from to add to our eclectic mix of art in our home - which is always a good thing.
Lies Behind by Anne Swankhart
As it was the opening night and pouring with rain outside, everyone was huddled inside the gallery. One beer for Chris and one Sprite for me and a quick meander around and notes taken on what we liked, we decided to leave early as the hounds were left in the garage and we were worried about them and I'm not my best in crowed spaces. Plus it gave us some time to procrastinate (something I do oh so well...) over whether we needed any more art - bearing in mind we are moving month end and all that comes with that process.
Later that week, one afternoon, we stopped by artSPACE to see if the pieces we liked were still there, they were too! So we dug deep and bought 10 small pieces from three different Durban-based artists. It felt good knowing we were supporting local artists and I can’t wait to have Chris hang them in our new house!
The exhibition runs until 16 January 2016 - So if you're in Durban go have a look-see or check out their blog - http://artspacedurban.blogspot.co.za - for upcoming exhibitions.
Until next time,
